Heart to Heart International Cambodia has been cooperating with PHD(Provincial Health Department), OD(Operational District) and health centers in order to train newly-hired health workers on primary eye health care since 2014.

Health worker training

In 2018, HHIC provided two trainings(May 21 ~ 25 and June 4~8) to 20 newly-hired health workers with the help of the eye health professionals invited from SRPH(Siem-Reap Provincial Hospital) and PHD(Siem-Reap Provincial Health Department). Through these trainings, health workers became able to identify major eye diseases such as cataract, refractive error, glaucoma, and etc. They also learned how to refer patients to upper level hospitals depending on patients' symptoms.

After the trainings, health workers had practice session on eye-screening and treatment with skilled nurses through outreach to health centers. Through this practice, they became able to apply the knowledge to their work and provide proper services to patients with eye diseases.

One of the trainees, Sovan, said that “Before the training, I barely knew about eye health. But the training helped me serve patients in need and refer them to the upper level hospital to receive the proper treatment.
