Heart to Heart Foundation Bangladesh Office, with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA),
has launched an ‘Integrated Health Screening‘ initiative in the Savar and Dhamrai areas of Dhaka District.
These areas have a high population of people with visual impairments and elevated mortality rates fromNon-Communicable Diseases
(NCDs, such as hypertension and high blood pressure), yet there are limited opportunities for health check-ups,
leading to many cases of late disease detection.
In particular, eye diseases can result in visual impairment or blindness if not detected early.
In response, the Foundation introduced an Integrated Health Screening service to enable residents
to receive comprehensive check-ups at nearby health facilities, such as Community Clinic.
This One-stop service allows individuals to have their height and weight(BMI), blood pressure, blood sugar measured,
and vision tested in a single visit, marking the first initiative of its kind in this community.
Flow of Integrated Health Screening
Improved Accessibility and Reduced Financial Burden
Residents can check multiple health indicators in a single visit at local Community Clinics,
reducing the expenses of transportation, time, and medical fees that would otherwise be incurred when visiting multiple hospitals individually.
Early Disease Detection
Detects eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, as well as hidden Non-Communicable Diseases(NCDs).
This helps secure the crucial golden hours for treatment.
From September 4 to 20, 42 Community Clinics screened residents, and about 70% were found to need referral to higher-level hospitals.
This highlights the large number of hidden patients and emphasizes the importance of the Integrated Health Screening.
We plan to refer all necessary patients to Upazila level hospitals and ensure they are followed up and properly managed.
Heart to Heart Foundation aims to make the Integrated Health Screening a regular service,
with each clinic designating an “Integrated Screening Day” starting next year.
Furthermore, through the training of local health workers and awareness-raising activities for residents,
the initiative seeks to enhance health consciousness and establish a culture of prevention-oriented care.
This Integrated Health Screening initiative embodies the principle of inclusive healthcare that ‘leaves no one behind‘
and serves as a critical foundation to help the people of Bangladesh enjoy healthier lives with better vision.
